Dad’s Cap

One of my more vivid memories from our family camping trips aside from the near-constant rain that seemed to follow us along the coastal campsite at Fort Steven’s was my dad’s fishing cap. Maybe it was the neon nylon, sharply contrasted against the grey, soaked backdrop, but I immediately associate that early 90’s Portland Beavers promo cap with catching what felt like an endless stream of Rainbows off the dock at Coffenbury Lake. Those memories are what inspired the TFTO Camp Cap in our collection.

A group of children and an adult camping outdoors near a wooded area. The children are holding small fish, with a makeshift tent and camping supplies visible.

Working from that original base silhouette with its peaked crown we looked to materials with their own history. The nylon twill was replaced with ETA Proof, a technical cotton developed for real conditions and real use, the same fabric construction worn by Sir Edmund Hillary on Everest. Long before innovation had a name, this was fabric chosen because it worked. The snapback closure gave way to a reinforced polyester strap, built for longevity. We preserved some of the small but meaningful details, like the internal crown support that I remember pulling down and using as an improvised eye shield.

The TFTO Camp Cap is finished with an embroidered Tales from the Outdoors. text as a nod to the history behind the piece, lightweight satin taffeta polyester under visor, and a woven yodel flag label at the back. It’s a cap inspired by sentimentality and reflects how nostalgia endures, evolves and eventually find their way back into use.
