A Family Fishing Album
Tremaine Emory’s fishing trips with his father become the starting point for Stüssy Tears.
A fishing wardrobe can hold a family history. An old jacket recalls who wore it, a particular lake brings back a particular person, and the clothes become difficult to separate from the days spent in them. That is a useful place to begin looking at Stüssy Tears.
The fifth collaboration between Stüssy and Denim Tears draws on Tremaine Emory’s fishing trips with his father, Tracy. Its campaign returns to Canopus Lake, identified by Denim Tears as Tracy’s favourite fishing spot. The collection arrived on October 16, carrying memories of New York fishing into a wardrobe intended to travel considerably farther.
The family reference gives the project a centre. Fishing has a readily recognisable visual vocabulary, but familiarity alone does not explain why a designer chooses it. Here, there is someone behind the reference, and a relationship behind the clothes. The campaign asks us to consider both.
That changes how a fishing vest reads. Storage and access remain visible, while the garment also becomes an invitation to remember who introduced us to the water. Clothing can do this without becoming a literal souvenir. A silhouette, colour or familiar arrangement of pockets can carry an association that its wearer understands immediately.
The collection moves between the practical language of slickers and more expressive pieces, including a rainbow-trout sequin hoodie. That range makes room for fishing to be remembered with personality. An activity associated with patience and routine can also produce colour, humour and clothes that want to be seen.
The most interesting editorial question sits between those approaches. How much of an experience survives when its clothing changes context? A garment may leave the bank, but it can still prompt a conversation about a father, a place or the ritual of spending a day together.
For Tales, this is where fishing’s relationship with fashion becomes worth following closely. Specific memories give a familiar reference depth. They let us discuss the clothes through the life around them, and give readers a way into the story even if they have never owned a rod.
Stüssy Tears offers that opening through a family album translated into garments. The first thing to notice is the clothing. The reason to stay with it is the person who took someone fishing.
