Twelve Pockets and a Down Vest

SOUTH2 WEST8 × NANGA × SUBU turns the fishing vest into winter outerwear.

There are few pieces of clothing more immediately associated with fishing than the vest. Its logic is almost embarrassingly straightforward. Put everything you might need within reach. Add another pocket when you run out of room. Then another. Function gradually becomes form. SOUTH2 WEST8 has spent more than two decades exploring exactly that relationship. Founded in Sapporo in 2003, the brand builds much of its visual language around tenkara and the landscape of Hokkaido. Fishing isn't simply an occasional graphic reference for the label; it sits close to the foundation of how the clothes are constructed.

For Autumn/Winter 2026, SOUTH2 WEST8 brings that thinking into colder weather through another collaboration with Japanese down specialist NANGA and winter-footwear brand SUBU. At the centre is the Fishing Down Vest. Made with NANGA's waterproof and breathable AURORA TEX material, the vest carries an extraordinary twelve pockets across the front and a large game pocket at the rear. Alongside it sits a version of SUBU's Insulation Shoe using the same material, lined for warmth and carrying the three collaborators' branding. The collection launched through Nepenthes on September 19.

What makes the vest interesting isn't simply the pocket count. Fishing clothing has always been a form of wearable equipment. The traditional vest exists because an angler needs to carry flies, leaders, tools and whatever else might be required without repeatedly reaching into a pack. SOUTH2 WEST8 preserves that logic while moving the object somewhere else. Down filling changes the proposition. This is no longer simply something worn over waders on a summer river. It begins to behave like conventional winter outerwear, something equally plausible layered over a sweatshirt in Sapporo, London or New York. And that distinction matters.

Outdoor fashion has borrowed the appearance of utility for years. Cargo pockets, D-rings, webbing and technical fabrics have become familiar aesthetic signals. SOUTH2 WEST8 remains interesting because those signals still have an identifiable source. The brand hasn't discovered fishing because fishing suddenly looks fashionable. Fishing has been the framework all along. The result is a piece sitting somewhere between equipment and clothing. Which, increasingly, may be the most interesting place for fishing product to exist.
